MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Longtime Morgantown High baseball coach Mark McCarty has submitted his resignation.
McCarty and Mohigans athletics director John Bowers confirmed the move, but neither were able to comment because the resignation has yet to be approved by the Monongalia County Board of Education.
McCarty held the position at MHS for 20 seasons, securing 14 Class AAA sectional championships and reaching the 2017 state tournament.
McCarty previously spent 11 years at Central Preston, where he earned the now-defunct high school nine Class AA sectional championships and took the program to the 1987 state tournament.
In his 31 years as a head coach, McCarty compiled an overall record of 561-223 and sent 41 players to play collegiately.
His resignation comes after a 2019 season in which Morgantown finished 29-7, falling in the Region I championship series against Wheeling Park.
In the deciding third game, Wheeling Park rallied with three runs in the seventh inning for a 6-5 victory.
Following the loss, there was a verbal altercation between McCarty and a disgruntled parent.
Morgantown High cannot post a job opening until the resignation is accepted by the board and becomes official. Accepting a resignation is generally a formality by the board.
