ARTHURDALE — the Midway Getters 4-H Club delivered a forest of trees to West Preston School Thursday.
For about 15 years, the club has given trees to students and staff at the school around Arbor Day as part of its conservation project. This year, 700 silky dogwood saplings were handed out at West.
About another 100 were given out at various locations through club members, and the Getters have about 300 trees available to the public, including some hazelnut saplings.
West Preston Principal Katie McDonald, a 4-H’er herself, said the trees can be a learning experience for students.
“They learn about responsibility and what can be achieved by just a little bit of effort,” she said. “And they also learn new things.”
West Preston student and Midway Getters member J.J. Montgomery, 9, said the tree giveaway is a way to teach people good things. The third grader said some of the trees he received in past years are now, “very big, about 5 or 10 feet tall.”
Midway Getters spends about $300 to buy the young trees each year, said Club Leader Donna Montgomery.
