MORGANTOWN — Coming off the school’s first state championship and an all-tournament selection, the accolades continue to roll in for University’s Kaden Metheny.
The junior point guard was named to the Class AAA all-state first team by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association today, the second-straight year Metheny claimed the honor. He was also a third-team selection as a freshman in 2017.
“It’s just icing on the cake with the success our team has achieved this year,” Metheny said.”
Morgantown senior Cam Selders also made the first team, improving from his second-team selection a year ago.
Metheny led the Hawks (24-4) in almost every offensive category, averaging 22.6 points per game, as well as 5.6 assists. He also knocked down 36 percent of his 3-point attempts and hit 83 from beyond the arc. His assist-to-turnover ratio was an impressive 2.17.
But his defensive abilities are what made Metheny one of the top overall guards in West Virginia this season. He averaged 3.6 steals per game this season and finished with a total of 105 in 28 games.
“I pride myself more on defense than I do offensive, especially when my defense leads to easy buckets for my team,” he said.
Selders was the Mohigans (16-10) top threat offensively, averaging 15.1 points per game. He battled injuries midway through the season and as a team, MHS struggled during that stretch. When he returned to full health, Selders led the Mohigans to five-straight wins and a regional championship before a state tournament loss to Capital.
“It honestly means a lot and is a blessing,” Selders said. “To be named up there with all the top players in the state and to be recognized is great. It’s a true honor that I’ll never forget.”
Selders also pulled down 4.1 rebounds and had 3.2 assists per game.
UHS’s K.J. McClurg, who was arguably just as important as Metheny to the Hawks in their title run, was named to the second team — his first postseason honor as a junior.
He averaged 21.1 points , 3.8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.8 steals per game, and like Metheny, McClurg was named to the all-tournament team after scoring a game-high 20 points in the state championship game against Martinsburg.
Morgantown seniors Nick Malone and Garrett Haines were named honorable mentions, while University senior Rodney Bucklew was also given that distinction.
