Aggressive defense lifts Fairmont Senior to state title game

CHARLESTON — Fairmont Senior’s aggressive style was a big factor in their No. 1 seed in the Class AA state tournament.

That aggressive play has continued through the first two days of the state tournament as well, and it was instrumental in defeating Frankfort 61-38 in Friday’s semifinal.

One night after recording 66 rebounds in a quarterfinal win over Bluefield, the Polar Bears out-rebounded the Falco 46-32. Twenty of the Polar Bears’ boards were on the offensive end.

Fairmont Senior (24-3) also applied relentless defensive pressure that enabled them to hold Frankfort (21-5) to a eight points over the second and third quarters.
Ansy Jordan recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Fairmont.

Courtney Wilfong and Abby Faulkner each scored 10 points to go with six rebounds, while Marley Washenitz finished with 10 points and five steals.

The Polar Bears pulled away with a 17-2 surge in the third quarter.

Abby Beeman led Frankfort with 13 points, but shot 5-for-18.

Frankfort’s Macie Miller had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
