MORGANTOWN — Lace up those running or walking shoes, hit the trail and help Morgantown High School’s Student Council.
For the second year, the organization plans a 5K event, held in conjunction with the school’s annual strawberry sale.
The Mohigan Strawberry 5K Run & Walk returns for its second year and will take place April 27 on the Caperton and Deckers Creek trails, with a start and finish behind the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place.
The event is organized by the MHS Student Council in cooperation with the MHS Foundation. The MHS Strawberry Sale is an annual fundraiser for the foundation.
The 5K is becoming an annual event to raise funds for Student Council, with the goal of generating funds to replace those lost from previous sources, according to a press release from the school. These funds are critical to the high academic achievement at MHS and go towards expanded educational opportunities and materials for students and teachers.
“At Morgantown High School, we’ve always received great community support,” Gretchen Gibson, MHS teacher and student council sponsor, said in the press release. “We know the community will step up once again and help us make sure MHS continues to be one of the country’s great high schools.”
The Mohigan Strawberry 5K Run & Walk will offer three ways to participate. The first is a 5K timed race — with awards — on an out-and-back course along the rail-trail. The second is a 5K fun run/walk using the same course. The third is a 200-yard kid’s sprint run.
The timed race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the fun run/walk at 10:15 a.m. The kid’s sprint run will begin at about 11:30, after all runners and walkers have completed the course.
The entry fee for either the timed race or the fun run/walk is $20. The kid’s sprint run is free.
The top male and female age-group finishers in the timed race, and all kids will receive awards. To register for the event, visit the Mohigan Strawberry 5K Run/Walk Facebook page or this site: https://runsignup.com/Race/WV/Morgantown/MohiganStrawberry5K2019.
An awards ceremony and special strawberry shortcake mixer for all participants will conclude the event. The ceremony and mixer, along with race registration and check-in, will in the patio and lower lobby area of the Morgantown Marriott, adjacent to the Caperton Trail.
