MORGANTOWN — Now that Neal Brown is here, the question is how many co-workers will be coming with him to fill out West Virginia’s new coaching staff.
According to one recruit, there is at least one significant name that will be on that list. Rashean Lynn, a wide receiver from Cocoa, Fla., told Rivals.com’s Keenan Cummings that current Troy defensive coordinator Vic Koenning extended him a scholarship offer to West Virginia. Lynn is an unsigned 3-star Class of 2019 receiver who will sign with a school in February.
Koenning has served as Brown’s defensive coordinator for his entire four-year tenure at Troy. The 58-year-old has plenty of experience at college football’s highest level, previously serving as a defensive coordinator at Clemson, Kansas State and Illinois. Before joining Brown at Troy, he spent three years with the title of associate head coach of defense and safeties coach at North Carolina.
The status of most of Dana Holgorsen’s West Virginia staff remains in flux at the moment. Wide receivers coach Tyron Carrier and running backs coach Marquel Blackwell are expected to join him in Houston. Cornerbacks coach Doug Belk has been offered a job at Houston as well, but informed MetroNews on Sunday evening that he has not yet taken it.
Current West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson, who interviewed for the job Brown ultimately got, is still under contract with the university for another year. If the Mountaineers elect to move on from Gibson, he will still be owed the full amount of $950,000 for the for the final year of his contract.
