MORGANTOWN —The Redeemed Christian Church of God had a vision to touch lives Saturday, according to Toyin Adebisi the wife of Pastor Adeniyi Adebisi.
“In our own little way we see it as a need and as part of what God has commanded us to do is to give and shall be given onto you,” she said.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God started in Africa, and part of their mission is to go around the world to show the love of Christ, according to Adeniyi. Their passion is to put smiles on people’s faces and to let them know that Christ loves everybody.
The church in Granville came together to hand out essentials to those in need. Also, people could stop by and talk to a doctor if needed. Toyin said it’s not about being less privileged — as people we are all equal — it’s about being there for those who need that extra support.
Around eight years ago, the church started giving back by providing gifts to foster children through the Department of Health and Human Resources. They’ve also given gifts to children in the hospital and to residents in nursing homes.
“We’re just part of the community. We’re just here to support the community in our little way,” said Toyin.
Segun Ajewole was volunteering his time Saturday, handing out food and other goods to people who needed it. He said they were giving out laundry soap, blankets, paper towels — basic things people might need every day.
“The essence of Christmas and the holidays is just to show love to all people no matter where you’re from or who you are,” said Ajewole.
Dr. Frank Osungwu was checking people’s blood pressure and consulting with patients Saturday. He said monitoring things like blood pressure and blood sugar is important, because some people may not even know they have a problem until it’s become apparent — in the form of a stroke or diabetes, for instance.
“Around here, some people have challenges with access to healthcare because they don’t have any insurance and stuff like that,” he said.
Providing this free service helps people become aware, and helps them know where they stand with their health. It might also motivate them to see a doctor, he said. Health is just as important as meeting the basic human needs, so the church wanted to address people as a whole.
“We know that God has entrusted in people’s welfare and their health, so that’s why the church has come up with this full package,” he said.
