High Mountain Off-Road shop in Westover catches fire

WESTOVER — Firefighters battled a small blaze at High Mountain On-Off Road, on Fairmont Road in Westover, Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 3:30 p.m., according to MECCA 911.

Westover Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kenny Goodwin said the fire was in a bathroom in the back corner of the garage. He said the fire was put out without incident and there were no injuries.

He said the cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

Two apartments above the garage were vacant and the fire did not appear to spread to them, Goodwin said.

Doug Nixon, manager and the only person in the building at the time, said he was writing quotes for customers in the office and sales floor part of the building, when he smelled smoke and heard crackling.

He went to the garage, saw the flames in the bathroom and called 911, he said.

Nixon said he doesn’t know what caused the fire, but the garage heater garage is above the bathroom.

While waiting for firefighters to arrive, Nixon said he opened the garage door and moved a customer’s truck outside and moved a second truck from in front of the building.

The damage appeared to be contained mostly to the back, right-hand corner and did not seem to extend far beyond the bathroom.

Westover VFD, Star City VFD, Granville Fire Department, Westover Police Department and Mon Health EMS responded.
