MORGANTOWN —The WVU Medicine Morgantown Marathon takes off at 7 a.m. Sunday and will wrap up by 2 p.m. The 26.2-mile course takes in much of the city, including Suncrest and downtown.
Area residents wanting to cheer on the runners have several streets and roadways along the course to see them.
Motorists trying to navigate those same routes, may want to find a way around the runners to avoid congestion.
Not all roads will be closed, but traffic may be stopped at times to allow runners to go by.
Road Closures
- Patteson Drive Westbound Right lane by sidewalk closed to traffic from 4 a.m. until 11 a.m.
- Van Voorhis Southbound lane by sidewalk closed to traffic from 4 a.m. until about 11 a.m.
- Van Voorhis Northbound lane to be coned off approx.. 200 feet from intersection directing traffic to left-hand northbound lane to prevent traffic from turning right/east on 705 into runner’s lane.
- University Avenue from Drummond Street to Broadway St. southeast lane will be closed from 4 a.m. until 11 a.m. Traffic wanting to travel South on University will be detoured to Stafford Street by law enforcement personnel, allowing for traffic to continue towards Patteson.
- Burroughs Street will be closed from 4 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
- Collins Ferry Rd Northeast will be closed from 4 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
- Van Voorhis Southbound right lane will be closed from 4 a.m. until approximately 10:30 a.m. from Killarney to 705 intersection, allowing for half marathon to turn west on Burroughs, while full marathoners cross intersection to enter east on 705 into far right eastbound lane. Traffic will be detoured to Hickory Lane, then to traffic light at Suburban Lanes.
- 705 Eastbound far right lane will be closed from 5 a.m. until approximately 11 a.m.
- 705 West Right turn lane on will be coned off at First Suncrest Town Center entrance, staying out of runners lane. Law enforcement will be at red light to hold traffic while runners pass through, then allow vehicles to turn right into Suncrest Town Center.
- 705 West Right turn lane onto Stewartstown road will be coned off, staying out of runners lane. Law enforcement will be at red light to hold traffic while runners pass through, then allow vehicles to turn right onto Stewartstown Road
- Stewartstown road north will be coned off on right hand lane, preventing westbound traffic on 705 that is turning from Stewartstown to enter runners lane. Law enforcement will be at red light to hold traffic while runners pass through, then allow vehicles to turn right onto 705 in left lane only.
- Mileground roundabout Right turning lane at will be closed to traffic from approximately 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Traffic wanting to turn right on Willey Street will be detoured North on the Mileground, then turn right on Hartman Run Road to Sabraton.
- Willey Street Southbound lane will be closed from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Traffic wanting to turn right on Willey Street will be detoured North on the Mileground, then turn right on Hartman Run Road to Sabraton.
- College Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- University Avenue to High Street will be maintained by law enforcement to Southbound traffic from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- High Street left lane will be closed from 6 a.m. to 11:30.
- Pleasant St Northbound from High St., including Pleasant St. Bridge, and Grand St will be closed from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- Dorsey Avenue South from Wagner Rd. to Barrickman Rd will be closed from 0600 to approximately 1130 for Tour Morgantown Full Marathon.
- S Walnut Street Brockway Ave/W.Va. 7 to Valley Crossing dropping down on Rail Trail will be closed from 6 a.m. to noon.
- Deckers Creek Blvd /Earl L Core Rd southbound right lane will be closed from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Greenbag Road West to Don Knotts Blvd will be closed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. ◦ Greenbag East will be open to one way traffic during this time. Traffic needing to travel to Don Knotts Blvd from Greenbag Road will be detoured to Sabraton and asked to travel on I-68 West to University Ave exit 1. Law enforcement will be stationed for the entirety of Greenbag road to maintain safety and traffic flow.
- Don Knotts Blvd /119 North west right lane to Morgantown Utility Board will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.– Coned off. Law enforcement personnel will be the intersection of Greenbag Road and
- Don Knotts Blvd, as well as placed on Don Knotts Blvd at Morgantown Utility Board to stop traffic both north and southbound, allowing for runners to cross Don Knotts Blvd and enter the Rail Trail.
- Law enforcement will be present at 6th St. and Beechurst Ave, allowing for runners to exit the rail trail, entering Beechurst Ave on the south bound lane, keeping runners in the lane closest to the Seneca Center and PRT. Cones will be placed where the road goes to single lane heading southbound on Beechurst Ave, until just past 6th Street, forcing traffic to the center lane that is heading south. Once past 6th Street, traffic will flow as normal until Morgantown Utility Board on Don Beechurst Ave just before Greenbag road.
- Expect numerous and frequent lane closures along the race routes, including closures/delays on: Burroughs, Windsor, Drummond, Elmhurst, Rotary St, Cambridge Ave, Kenmoore St, Parkview Dr, Fairlawns Ave, Mulberry St, Broadway, Jr. Ave, Aspen, Greendale, Woodland Dr, Eastern, Dogwood Ave, Wilson Ave, Allison St, Wagner Rd, Waitman St, Simpson St, Euclid Ave, Washington St, Kingwood St, Cobun Ave, S Walnut St, Eljadid St, Mississippi St, East Pkwy, Hite St, Madigan Ave.
Mountain Mama 8K — Sunday 7:30 a.m.-9 a.m.

- University Avenue from Mulberry Street to Drummond St. northwest lane will be closed from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. Northwest traffic will be detoured north on Jr. Ave, East on Legion St, South on Rebecca St, East on Rotary St., North on Collins Ferry Rd, East on Killarney Drive, South Back to Van Voorhis Drive.
