Biz After Hours

Alpine Lake Resort will host a  Preston Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours 5-7 p.m. Thursday. The resort is located at 700 W. Alpine Drive, Terra Alta.

Sing out

 Going to pottery

Classes in wheel-thrown pottery are scheduled at the Riverbend Art Studio in the Szilagyi Center in Rowlesburg

The eight-week class is open to ages 12 and up. Classes are limited to six, which means that each student has his or her own wheel. A class tailored to teens is offered after school to 6 p.m. (depending on  students’ schedules).

The evening class is from 6 to 9 p.m. The fall 2018 term begins Oct. 10. The 2019 terms will begin Jan. 9 and March 20.

Holocaust survivor

Meet Holocaust Survivor Charles Ota Heller 7 p.m. Friday at Preston Community Arts Center, 123 S. Price St., Kingwood. Heller was born in Prague three years before Czechoslovakia was invaded and occupied by Hitler’s Germany. His father escaped and joined the British Army, his mother was taken to a slave labor camp, and Charlie was hidden on a farm until the war’s end in 1945.

At least 25 members of his family were murdered by the Nazis. Following the war, the Hellers escaped after the Communist take-over of the country and came to the U.S. in 1949.

His memoir, “Prague:  My Long Journey Home,” will be for sale after the program. Admission is by donation at the door.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Bounce Back at church

Wesley United Methodist Church, 109 W. Main St., Kingwood, will present Bounce Back to School 3-6 p.m.  Aug. 19. There will be food, bounce houses, face painting, a dunk tank, crafts, games and mores. Free bags of school supplies will be given to the first 100 children.

Support group meets

The Preston County Health Department monthly Diabetic Support Group 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 22, at the WVU Extension Office on Court Street. There will be no meeting in September due to the Buckwheat Festival. Info: 304-329-0096.
