MORGANTOWN — As we near the end of July, parents and children have probably come to a standstill where both need a break from one another.
It’s the summertime and you think you’re going to have the house to yourself, along with having your friends over while the parents are at work.
No, you’re too young to stay at home by yourself.
So, when can a parent feel comfortable leaving their child on their own for many hours?
Friday evening, the Morgantown Public Library held its first annual National Teen Library Lock-In Day.
National Teen Lock-In Day is a nationwide celebration where libraries invite teenagers to celebrate summer reading while also participating in fun contests and popular crafts.
“At the beginning of the year we did a county-wide survey and this was one of the ideas that had been mentioned,” said team services specialist Crystal Isner.
“It is a great opportunity for teenagers to meet new friends and have fun while doing so.”
As technology advances, librarians and young adults are introduced to activities that some may not be familiar or have access to.
While boxes of pizza and snacks are laying at their fingertips, it didn’t prevent them from engaging in group activities such as Jeopardy and Dungeons and Dragons.
“We have some new faces today which is great, as well as ones we’ve gotten to know over the years,” said Isner.
“I’m glad we’re able to give them a place to hang out while learning at the same time.”
