KINGWOOD — The Kingwood Post 56 baseball team split a pair of games in the opening two days of the West Virginia American Legion Area 4 tourney.
On the first day of action, a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning powered Kingwood to a 5-3 win over Moorefield. Austin Forbes and Dillon Williams paced Kingwood with two hits each, while Andrew Kerzak earned to win on the mound in 6 2/3 innings of work.
“It was a great team performance [July 26] with excellent pitching and fielding. We came up with some timely hits in the sixth,” coach Jeff Pyles said. “This is what we expect from our team.”
Due to rain, day two of play was moved to Kingwood, where top seed Romney nabbed a 6-4 victory over the host.
Kingwood rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead heading into the final inning, and looked ready to open tournament play 2-0. Romney, however, scored three runs in the last at-bat to take a commanding two-run lead that Kingwood wouldn’t recover from. (Statistics for the game were unavailable.)
Play will return to Moorefield today, as Kingwood takes the diamond at 2 p.m. to face Moorefield in an elimination game. The winner will face Romney at 5:30 p.m.
