DANIELS — Only one other player has more West Virginia Open titles than Harpers Ferry’s David Bradshaw: “Slammin’ ” Sam Snead, with 17.
In 1960, Snead claimed his 10th Open title at the age of 49; July 27 marked the 10th Open championship for David Bradshaw, just 35 years old.
He collected them in the 14 years since his first victory, in 2004, at Edgewood Country Club.
Bradshaw entered Friday’s final round at The Resort at Glade Springs with a six shot lead on the next competitor, with scores of 63 and 66.
In all, 64 players entered the final round against the George Cobb designed course.
After a first hole bogey following an errant tee shot, Bradshaw quickly settled down. He carded back to back birdies on the par-5 second hole and the difficult 252-yard par-3 third, the latter with a great pitch-in birdie from the bunker.
A run of pars ended when Bradshaw carded his final birdie of the opening nine, on the par-4 eighth, to turn at 2-under for the day.
On the back nine, Bradshaw had a three-putt bogey on the 11th, then six straight pars.
He finished with a birdie on 18 to close the tournament at 15-under 199.
He had eighteen birdies and just three bogeys over the 54-hole championship.
Will Evans, of Charleston, was second, six shots back. Evans vaulted up the leaderboard the final two rounds with scores of 73-66-66 for a 205.
Claiming low junior and low amateur honors was Mason Williams, 18, of Bridgeport, who will play at Georgia Southern in the fall. He claimed third place after a closing round of 71.
One shot behind Williams was Scott Depot’s Chris Williams, with a 207. The highest area finisher was Morgantown’s Ryan Bashour, with a 216.
