GRANVILLE — Nick Dunn scored on a groundout in the first inning to give State College the led for good July 17, and the Spikes went on to a 4-3 win over the West Virginia Black Bears.
Cory Malcom got Edison Lantigua to fly out with runners on first and second to end the game for his fourth save.
Trailing, 4-2, the Black Bears cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when Grant Koch drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Robbie Glendinning.
State College left-hander Diego Cordero (1-0) picked up a quality start and the win, allowing three runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. Opposing starter Mike LoPresti (1-1) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game, giving up four runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
The five extra-base hits for State College included a season-high five doubles.
The Black Bears failed to capitalize on some good scoring chances, leaving 12 runners on base. Nick Valaika homered, doubled and singled.
The teams meet again tonight at Mon County Ballpark.
