FAIRVIEW — The town of Fairview will observe Independence Day with an old-fashioned celebration Wednesday.
This year’s celebration is themed “Our Flag: Held In Honor.” Festivities include the Ray Hedrick 5K Fun Run, the grand parade at 10 a.m., a concert by the Fairview Community Band and a program with guest speaker Congressman David McKinley at 1 p.m. McKinley has represented the First District of West Virginia in Congress since 2011. As a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, he has been active with issues related to the coal industry, environmental regulation, energy efficiency and health care.
Following the speaking program, students from the Fairmont State University Academy for the Arts will provide entertainment, followed by games and contests for all ages, including a cake walk. The annual Acoustic Jam Session will also take place during this time.
The remainder of the evening includes magician Steve Haberman and a special performance by Jerry Vilar, Fairmont’s Hat Lady. There will also be performances by Smoky Robbins and the band Almost Famous. The celebration will conclude with fireworks at 10 p.m.
Throughout the day, several community organizations will sell concessions; otherwise, all activities are free of charge.
Organizations, groups or individuals are welcome to participate in the parade. Contact Belinda Frausto at 681-404-2470 or belinda.
