MORGANTOWN — C.B. Wilson, associate provost for academic personnel at WVU, will conduct the Morgantown Municipal Band when it performs its Independence Day program at 11 a.m. Wednesday, as part of the 2018 “Celebration of America.” The concert will be performed under the front overhang of the WVU Creative Arts Center, due to the renovation of the Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park.
Featured soloist will be violinist Master Gunnery Sgt. Peter Wilson, United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own.” He joined the group in September 1990. He was appointed principal second violin in 1991 and string section commander in 2007. He also serves as the “Voice of the Marine Barracks,” the official ceremonial narrator of Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C.
Master Gunnery Sgt. Wilson began his musical training at 2. After graduating in 1986 from Morgantown High School, he earned a bachelor of music degree in violin performance from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1990. He earned a master of music in 1995 and a doctorate in 2007 from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
In keeping with a long-standing tradition, Wilson will tie the program together with a theme that is not announced in advance. The program includes music by John Williams, George Gershwin, Jerry Bilik, John Philip Sousa, Irving Berlin and others.
This program marks the twenty-ninth consecutive Independence Day Concert by the band; the series has been continuous since 1990.
Patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, and sun protection (hats, umbrellas). Parking is available in the parking lot adjacent to the Creative Arts Center.
