MORGANTOWN — May temperatures were nearly 10 degrees higher than is usual for the mid-spring month.
This weekend and next, Morgantown should see more seasonable temperatures.
“The temperatures were quite warm for May in Morgantown,” said Paul Walker, AccuWeather meterologist.
The average for May is 60.9 degrees. Last month’s average was 8.8 degrees higher, or 69.4.
Walker said nights staying warmer helped keep the average up.
“We had numerous days in the upper 80s,” he said. Counting them off, he added that Morgantown saw eight days of 85 degrees or higher in May.
“It was a very cloudy and moist month,” he continued. “It was a very wet month. There were 5.83 inches of precipitation recorded at the Morgantown airport; 4.57 inches is normal. That’s 25 percent more than normal.”
Walker attributed the higher temperatures to the flow from the south and southwest. He said it was cooler in the West, but the warm air flowed into the East.
Though Morgantown may not reach 80 this weekend or next week, Walker said to “expect temps to average near or slightly above normal.”
Today, temperatures should be about 78, which Walker said is a couple of degrees higher than usual. Sunday, should reach about 77, which he said is normal. Both days will likely include rain.
Monday will be the start of temperatures in the low 70s, reaching only 71.
Walker said a couple of cold fronts will work their way in, causing this drop in temperatures.
“It will be cool probably until the 9th or 10th of the month and then it will start trending back up,” he said.
