Masontown Postmaster celebrates customers

MASONTOWN — When her boss told her to hold an event for Small Business Week, Masontown Postmaster Barbara Darlington wanted to do more than hand out brochures.
She wanted her customers to know how much they are appreciated. So she turned her event into a customer appreciation day.

“The event was to promote EDDM or Every Door Direct Mail. It’s the cheapest way for small businesses to advertise,” Darlington said.
She said EDDM helps the community because small businesses can go to local printers to have their printing done.

Gary DeWitt, sales service associate at the post office, said he believed customer appreciation day was good for the community.
“Being a small town post office, we rely on and appreciate our customers,” he said. “We feel we are a part of the community.”
Darlington agreed.
“Our customers are really great people. We decided to do the food and make it more fun,” she said. “We had balloons and we had hot dogs, cookies, donuts and coffee. We put out brochures about our products for people to look at or take.”
“We have a lot of small businesses. We believed it was important for us to make them aware of the services we have to offer,” DeWitt said.

Darlington said she likes to think of the post office being a friendly place where people can go to do business.
“I had customers who came up to me and said our appreciation day was really nice. They said this had not happened at the post office before.”
