Dr. Brooks Gainer dies: Some of his patients had four legs and fur

MORGANTOWN — RIP, R.B.G.

That’s what people were saying March 29 at the “ReTails” thrift shop, in Morgantown Mall.

That’s in reference to Dr. Brooks Gainer, the physician and animal advocate who died the night before at a WVU women’s basketball game.

Gainer was a tireless volunteer at the shop that presents 100 percent of its sales to a group that offers spay and neuter services to keep the region’s pet population down.

Gainer would sign the calendar that marked his shifts with “R.B.G.” The “R” represented his first name of Robert.

Gainer would ring up sales and move heavy furniture — whatever needed done.

His medical profession was infectious diseases.

His second calling was to simply care for his community.

Gainer and his late wife, Suzanne, gave their time to several causes across the region.
