KINGWOOD — The Preston County Board of Education hired a company to design new roofs for two schools.
The State School Building Authority is giving Preston County Schools $1,292,400 to replace roofs on Kingwood Elementary and Bruceton School.
Assistant Superintendent Brad Martin, sitting in for Superintendent Steve Wotring at Monday’s board meeting, said it’s hoped the projects can be done this summer.
Arrangements are being made for summer programs, such as Energy Express, which is usually held at Kingwood Elementary, to be at Preston High this summer so students aren’t near the construction area, Martin said.
TNT Roofing Products Inc. was hired to do the design. Board Member Robert “Mac” McCrum asked what type of roofs are planned? Martin said they will be shingled, not rubber membrane roofs.
Wotring was in Charleston, Martin said. Board President Crissy Estep also was not at the meeting, so board Vice President Jack Keim chaired the meeting.
Also at the meeting:
- Martin said girls’ middle school volleyball will begin as a club sport this spring. Volunteer sponsors are being sought, and six people have applied.
- Karen Haring and Teresa Martin of Libera, an organization that “holds groups and mentors women to find freedom from physical, emotional, intellectual and relational barriers,” asked to be allowed to introduce the program in county schools.
Keim suggested that, since this is the first time Libera would come into a school system, county guidance teachers meet with County Attendance Director Carol Riley and discuss it first. Other board members agreed.
