ART: Reception for MAC’s ‘Carpe Lucem’ March 16

MORGANTOWN — Monongalia Arts Center (MAC) will celebrate a new exhibition with a public reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 16 for Gary Schubert’s “Carpe Lucem.” This exhibition will be available to the public at 11 a.m. during normal MAC operating hours. All are welcome to attend the reception, observe the art and engage with other artists and art-lovers.
“Carpe Lucem” showcases work from photographer, painter and printmaker Schubert in the Benedum Gallery this March.
Schubert, an artist, art collector and professor, has had his work featured in many public collections in the U.S., including the Whitney Museum of Art and the Huntington Museum of Art. His work features themes of nudity and nature, given new life with technology-driven patterns and design including infrared photography and computational art. Schubert focuses on classic art subjects, with the human figure, architecture and landscapes all being represented in this exhibition.
Growing up in West Virginia, graduating from Morgantown High School and attending WVU, Schubert carried a passion for art from his early youth.
When asked about art in his childhood, he responded: “My parents were very encouraging in all my pursuits and engendered a love of learning, books, photography, and the arts in general. My father was an enthusiastic photographer all of his life. He gave me my first camera, a twin-lens 120 film camera, when I was 10 and I was hooked.” Schubert cites Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, and Lucien Clergue artists that influenced his style, as well as Tom Nakashima and Victor Vasarely as non-photographic influences that inspire his work.
When asked about the arts community in Morgantown that he is a part of, Schubert reminds us all to “Collect art from living artists! You will love it and you will help artists to make more great art.”
