Emil “Cactus” Curtis Fowler, Sr., 89, left his home in Bruceton Mills (Pisgah community) Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to go on his biggest hunting adventure.
After graduating from University High School in 1957, Emil traveled to Florida to find work. Upon his return to the area, he worked as a brick mason for Whipkey Construction Company. He later worked as a foreman at Blacksville Mine before becoming an independent contractor. He was known as being one of the best brick masons in the tri-state area.
Emil loved to go camping, hunting and fishing, especially with his son, Emil, II.
Taking his Four Winds on trips around the state literally made him a happy camper. He enjoyed going to Bunner’s Ridge and other venues with his brothers to listen to country music and dance the night away. He absolutely loved home cooked meals and was very excited when he once reached a weight of 140 pounds.
Cactus had a dry sense of humor and could deliver a punch line without cracking a smile. He never met a stranger.
Emil is survived by his son, Emil Fowler, II; daughters, Kimberly Fowler (Joe Skalican), Laura Gibson (Greg), and Jennifer Parisi (Seb); grandchildren, Jessica Walls, Derrick Walls, Chelsea Gibson, Stefanie Brister and Leigh Keener; two great- grandchildren, Mason Barlow and Ella Brister; his brother,
Eldon Fowler; and several nieces and nephews.
Emil was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Fowler and Goldie Fowler Byrd; daughter, Christine Walls Putkowski; brothers, Theodore Fowler, Edgar Fowler, Butch Fowler; and sister, Dorothy Whipkey.
To honor his memory, play some country music, go fishing, make someone laugh or eat some bread pudding.
A special thanks to his caregiver, Harvey Hart, who was like a son to Emil; and to Amedisys Hospice for the wonderful care that they
provided.
