MORGANTOWN – It was a busy weekend for winter sports around the area as teams played games they had previously postponed due to weather along with their regularly scheduled ones.

Girls basketball

Class AAAA

The Preston Knights earned two victories over the weekend to return to winning ways. PHS downed Hedgesville 46-29 on Friday before defeating North Hagerstown 60-43 on Saturday.

The Knights will play three games this week against Bridgeport, Robert C. Byrd, and Philip Barbour.

Class A

The Trinity Christian Warriors earned two wins in three days over the weekend.

TCS defeated Hundred 54-25 on Thursday but fell to Notre Dame 47-27 on Friday. However, the Warriors finished the week positively with a 44-37 victory over Magnolia in overtime in the New Martinsville rotary Shootout on Saturday evening.

Clay-Battelle dropped a contest to Tygarts Valley 45-27 on Friday but responded with a one-possession victory over Union 51-49 on Saturday.

Boys basketball

Class AAAA

No. 2 Morgantown improved to 9-1 on the season with a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday.

The Mohigans defeated John Marshall 72-21 on the road on Friday, then traveled to Magnolia High School for the Rotary Shootout, where they picked up an impressive 80-50 win over the No. 1-ranked team in Class AAA, Nitro. Junior Marcus Goins led MHS with 22 points on Saturday.

Class A

Trinity Christian picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, 67-63 over Edison (Oh.) in overtime.

Wrestling

University traveled to Parkersburg on Friday for a tri-match with Parkersburg and Connellsville (Pa.).

The Hawks defeated Parkersburg 44-30 but fell to Connellsville 41-32.

Preston High School traveled to Elkview for the Herbert Hoover Memorial Wrestling Tournament and returned to Kingwood as the third-place finishers.

The Knights had seven individual placers: Cole Turner (1st), Levi Jennings (1st), Sam Klimas (2nd), Blake Jennings (3rd), Brayden Miller (3rd), Hayden Lantz (3rd), and Cody Smith (4th).
