Catherine D. “Kitty” Root, 90, of Morgantown, passed away Monday afternoon, January 6, 2025, in Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown.
She was born February 25, 1934, in Morgantown, a daughter of the late Charles Dean and Virginia Evelyn Dysard Howell.
Survivors include her two sons, David Allen Root and wife Dana, and Brian James Root and wife Robin, all of Morgantown; five grandchildren, Matthew, David, Jennie, Rachel and Allison; and 11 great- grandchildren, Ty, Peyton, Hensley, Hudson, Hayes, Roman, Addison, Piper, Hannah, Lilly and James; a sister, Jean Luzier and husband Phil of Morgantown; and a brother, Robert Howell and wife Kay of Morgantown; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Root April 23, 2021; a daughter, Terry Lynn Lipscomb; and two sisters, Patricia Gallagher and husband Mick, and Mary Ann Freed and husband Boyd.
She was a faithful member of the Goshen Baptist Church and loved attending her Bible study.
Kitty was an administrative assistant in the English Department and the Admissions Office at West Virginia University.
She and her husband traveled all over the world when he was enlisted in the Air Force. They volunteered their time with Meals on Wheels for many years. She was a doting grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Friends may join the family to honor Kitty’s life and legacy from 4 until the time of the funeral service at 6 p.m. Friday, January 10, in Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Avenue, Westover (304-292-9494), officiated by Pastor Dan Meadows. Following the funeral service, Kitty will be cremated and laid to rest with her husband at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
