The University High School wrestling team traveled to Amityville, NY, over the weekend for the annual Norm Maisel Amityville wrestling tournament. The Hawks captured the overall title, with individual champions in 10 weight classes.

The winners were Pepper Martin (116), Colton Gillespie/Kaden Nieman (124, co-champions), Nico Maisel (132), Timmy Husk (138), Max Vitale (144), Carter Pauley (152), Rider Ludrosky/Finn Cox (160, co-champions), Brody Kehler (170), Jackson Pate/Ryder Hastings (215, co-champions), Brock Kehler (285).

The co-champions decided to share first place in three weight classes as the finals matched two members of the UHS team against each other. Rather than wrestling a teammate, the Hawks elected to be named co-champions.

Freshman Nico Maisel was named the weekend’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. The tournament is named after his grandfather Norm, the father of UHS head coach Ken Maisel.

The Hawks return home on Wednesday night to host Wheeling Park at 6:00 p.m.

Morgantown High School hosted its first home match on Saturday, welcoming Park View (Va.) and Annandale (Va.). The Mohigans split their pair of matches on the day, defeating Park View before falling in a close match to Annandale.

The MHS girls wrestling team also traveled to Williamstown for its first-ever tournament.
