Thomas H. DeVault, 77, of Mt. Morris, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, Saturday, November 23, 2024, in Mon General Hospital. He was born December 11, 1946, in Kingwood, to the late Frederick and Thelma Whittaker DeVault.
He was a graduate of Valley High School and attended West Virginia University.
Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and his career was with the federal government, working as a federal mine inspector for MSHA. After his retirement from the government, he worked as an expert witness for Joe Boggs & Associates and the law firm of Dinsmore & Shohl.
He loved spending time with his sons and families, playing with all the grandchildren and challenging them with his famous math riddles, and of course playing games. He was an avid fly fisherman and loved his annual trips with family and friends backpacking and camping on the Cranberry Glades.
He was a longtime member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and served as council president and board member of Community Lutheran Partners for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet DeVault; son, John and fiancee Laura; and grandsons, Ford and Davis, all of Rocky Mount, Va.; son, Brian and wife Ashley, and granddaughters, Marya, Kate Rose and Blake, all of Leesburg, Va.; brothers, James Nett and wife Grace of Milledgeville, Ga., William Earl DeVault of Beckley; and sister, Donna Williams; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Jack Nett; and in-laws, John and Alta Mundell.
In keeping with his wishes, Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation arrangements.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 7, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 309 Baldwin Street, Morgantown, with Pastor Tony Setley officiating.
