James A. McCabe, 78, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully Friday, November 22, 2024. Born June 7, 1946, he was a son of the late John Henry McCabe and Evelyn Pauline Sisler.
James dedicated his life to serving his community, proudly holding the role of chief of police for the City of Morgantown. His leadership, courage and commitment to justice left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Beyond his work, James had a passion for life. He loved running his beagles, enjoyed watching Westerns, and considered golf his second job.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Banks; and his four sons: James A. McCabe Jr., retired SMSgt USAF (Karen); Patrick Scott McCabe, retired SMSgt USAF (Vonda); Matthew Todd McCabe, retired Captain MPD (Debbie); and Richard Meleady, retired Maj USAF (Debbie). James was immensely proud of his sons’ service to their country. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his brother, John McCabe.
James will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and leader who cared deeply for his family and community. His presence in the lives of those who loved him will be greatly missed but fondly remembered.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate James’ life during visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 26, in Fred Jenkins Funeral Home, where visitation continues from 9 to 10 a.m., the time of a service, Wednesday, November 27. James will be laid to rest at Maplewood Cemetery in Kingwood.
