Human remains found on Little Indian Creek Road; sheriff investigating

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after receiving a report of human remains found Nov. 15 on Little Indian Creek Road.

According to a release authorized by Sheriff Perry Palmer, the remains were found near the intersection with Birchfield Run Road. The area was immediately secured and deputies were called in to investigate.

When they arrived, investigators found what appeared to be a shallow grave. Assisted by the FBI Evidence Recovery Team, Pittsburgh Field Office, as well as a forensic anthropology team from Mercyhurst University, the remains were exhumed and sent to the West Virginia Office of the Medical Examiner for autopsy and identification. The body will then go to Mercyhurst University for a complete forensic anthropology examination and additional evidence collection.

According to the release, the assisting teams specialize in recovering forensic evidence during homicide investigations.

The case is under investigation as a homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 304-291-7260.

The release states that no further information will be provided at this time.

Other assisting agencies include West Virginia State Police, the Mon Metro Drug Task Force and MECCA 911.
