Prep roundup: MHS girls’ soccer headed back to Beckley, volleyball regional matchups being set

MORGANTOWN – The 2024 fall sports season is on a crash course toward crowning this year’s state champions. Multiple sports will all hold state finals in the next two weeks, including cross country, soccer, and volleyball.

Class AAA girls soccer

The Morgantown Mohigans are heading back to the state tournament in search of their third consecutive Class AAA state championship after defeating Bridgeport 5-1 on Tuesday night in the Region I championship final.

Junior striker Ella Miller scored a hat trick within the first ten minutes of the opening kickoff to propel MHS to an early 3-0 advantage that the Indians couldn’t overcome.

Miller added an assist to freshman Shae Nethken, and junior Lily Gorman-Wilson added the fifth goal with a free kick in the second half.

The Mohigans will battle Region III champion George Washington in the Class AAA semifinals of the WVSSAC state girls soccer tournament next Thursday, November 7, at 5:00 p.m. at Paul Cline Sports Complex in Beckley.

Class AAA volleyball

Both the Morgantown Mohigans and the University Hawks made it through their sectional tournament brackets unscathed, sweeping the competition 3-0.

MHS downed John Marshall on Tuesday evening to punch its ticket to next week’s Region I co-final. The Mohigans will play host to Buckhannon-Upshur, who finished as runner-up in Region II.

The Hawks defeated B-U on Tuesday night to capture the Region II title. They will also host a regional co-final, with a chance to secure a trip to Charleston, as John Marshall will visit UHS next week.

Both matches will begin at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday from Wilson Avenue and Baker’s Ridge.
