Prep roundup: soccer and volleyball entering final stages of regular season

Volleyball

The OVAC conference tournaments wrapped up this weekend, with Morgantown and Trinity Christian each battling for placement.

The Warriors matched up with Beallsville (Oh.) in the 1A-3A 5th/6th place contest and came home with a 3-0 sweep to take fifth place.

The Morgantown Mohigans traveled to St. Clairsville for the championship game of the 5A tournament, where they faced Marietta (Oh.). The Tigers proved too much for MHS this time in a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-20, 25-15) to take the title.

University was scheduled to visit Warren (Oh.) in the 3rd/4th place contest for 5A, but that match was canceled due to travel issues and will not be played.

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgantown Mohigans traveled south on Saturday morning for a matchup against the Hurricane Redskins in Class AAA. Senior midfielder Lilly Staples scored a hat-trick, the first of her career, to lead MHS to a 3-0 victory over Hurricane on the road and improve to 12-1-2.

University played to a 0-0 draw with Fairmont Senior on Saturday and sit at 4-11-3 on the 2024 season.

Preston fell 5-1 to Musselman on Saturday before turning around on Monday with a 10-0 victory over Liberty. The Knights improved to 5-10-3 with Monday’s win.


Boys’ Soccer

The University Hawks improved to 9-6-2 with a 5-3 victory over Buckhannon-Upshur on Baker’s Ridge on Saturday morning. UHS will return home Thursday to host Bridgeport in a highly-anticipated contest.

The Preston Knights defeated John Marshall 2-0 on Saturday in Kingwood. PHS sits at 5-12-1 heading into the final week of the regular season.
