Prep Roundup: University bests Morgantown in volleyball matchup of top teams

Class AAA Volleyball

The University Hawks defeated their crosstown rival Morgantown 3-1 on Thursday night in front of a packed house at MHS.

After dropping the opening set 25-18, the Hawks (24-4-1) took the following three sets 25-22, 25-23, and 25-17 to secure their first victory over the Mohigans (21-3) since the 2019 season.

“It was a typical UHS/MHS match,” UHS head coach Nick Lusk said. “Every set was close, and we really had to fight and dig for every point. We had some players step up for us when they needed to and our senior leadership carried us over the hump when we needed them. That type of win in volleyball doesn’t happen without good leaders.”

Lusk says his club’s effort on the defensive end was better than the first matchup against MHS, a 3-1 defeat. Against the powerful attack that MHS poses on offense, the Hawks got exactly what they needed to help themselves earn a huge victory.

“The first time we played them, we built a lot of confidence even in the loss,” he said. “And I can’t stress enough how vital our seniors are to the team and were in the match last night. We were emotional, but we didn’t play emotional.”

Lusk says sophomore Riley Braham and junior Keira Dunn also played huge roles on Thursday night. Dunn is a player that has been implemented into the rotation more often in recent games, and being able to see a deeper bench going into the hardest part of the season is something Lusk will welcome with open arms.

“Having those two step up was big, especially Riley,” he said. “We had high expectations for Riley from day one of her freshman year and she is showing why we felt that way. Keira has been playing well and was in the rotation off and on, but has become a bigger part of it recently.”

It won’t be long until the next Mohawk matchup as the two sides will face off in the OVAC tournament semifinals this coming Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Morgantown High School.

The Morgantown Mohigans defeated the Brooke Bruins 10-0 on the road. MHS enjoyed goals from Riley Brabson (2 goals, 3 assists), Fynn Rolston (3 goals), Aidan Stire (2 goals), Cooper Cave, Anthony Vessechia, and Colin Petsko (1 goal each). MHS improved to 11-2-2 on the 2024 season and will travel to Washington on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
