Lots to do for returning WVU students, locals

Welcome back, students! While Morgantown is getting ready for the influx of Mountaineers returning to campus, make sure to check out some of the exciting events going on in the area. There’s another free concert happening at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheater which is great news for those looking for Friday night plans! Rodeo lovers will be happy to know that it’s almost time for the Monongalia County Fair. Prepare for bronco riding, bull riding and barrel racing during their Rodeo Nights. School may be back in session, but summer fun isn’t over yet!

Steep Canyon Rangers, 6:30 p.m. Friday  

Your next free concert at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheater is the Steep Canyon Rangers. This band will bring a blend of bluegrass and Americana to the stage. You’ll be captivated by their authentic storytelling and musicianship. Opening for them is the alt-folk group The Shoats.  

MAC Dream House Fundraiser, 7 p.m. Saturday   

It’s time to get dolled up! The Monongalia Arts Center is holding their biggest fundraiser of the year. You’ll find live entertainment, new gallery shows, a silent auction and refreshments all at this event. There will even be on-site childcare so kiddos can have their own fun. Have a great time while supporting your local arts.  

The History of Camp Dawson, 1:30 p.m. Sunday  

History buffs are in for a treat! Hear Major Richard Hines, the Command Historian for the West Virginia National Guard, talk about the history of Camp Dawson. The event is free and includes a tour of McGrew House at 1 p.m., a speaking presentation at 1:30 p.m. and light refreshments afterward. 

Monongalia County Fair, time varies, Aug. 20-24  

The fair is back in town. The Monongalia County Fair is sure to bring fun for the whole family. Experience the joys of the carnival rides, livestock, vendors and more! Rodeo nights on Aug. 21-22 will show guests a wild good time, and this year’s new Lumberjack Competition will feature lumberjacks from all over the state. Admission is $10 per person, and children under the age of two are free. Only cash will be accepted at the gate.
