Peter Turner

Peter Yost Turner, 84, of Bruceton Mills, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

He was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Fairmont, the son of the late Harry and Florence (Cunningham) Turner.

Peter is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy Turner; a daughter, Tracy Westerman and husband, Charles; as well as his stepson, Christopher L. Pigott and stepdaughter, Rita L. Church, both of Morgantown; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dove Phillips; son, Peter Y. Turner II; and daughter, Terry Ann Turner.

Peter was a veteran in the United States Marine Corps for ten years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant at the time of his discharge in 1969. After serving his country, he became a coal miner and retired from Dupont Coal (CONSOL).

He was also a graduate of Salem University. Peter was a Methodist by faith. He was a member of Morgantown Union Lodge #4 AF&AM masonic affiliations including, Royal Arch Masons of WV, Knights Templar of WV, Order of the Eastern Star of WV, Council of Knight Masons, Order of the Mystic Shrine – OSIRIS/Morgantown Shrine Club, El Tor Grotto in Wheeling, Mountaineer Patrol Marching Unit, Order of Knights of York, WV College of Sociétés Rosicrucians, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, St. Thomas of Acon, Scottish Rite Masons-33rd degree Personal Representative and Fort Henry York Rite College No. 61. He was also affiliated with Red Mans Club Cumberland, Maryland, Marine Corps League, VFW #629, American Legion in Pennsylvania and the Moose Lodge.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation services have been provided.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20. At the conclusion of the visiting, the Eastern Star and Scottish Rite will perform ritualistic services.

A committal service will take place at the West Virginia National Cemetery, 42 Veterans Memorial Lane, Grafton, WV 26354, with full military funeral rites. The Morgantown Union Lodge #4 AF&AM will conduct ritualistic masonic services on at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 21.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests for donations in Peter’s memory for the Laurance Jones III Childhood Language Center, 1313 Quarrier St., Suite A, Charleston, WV 25301.
