The West Virginia University Extension 4-H Older Members Conference will host an educational opportunity for campers to learn about pollinators during National Pollinator Week, June 17-23, at Jackson’s Mill. The hands-on activity is set for 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the WVU Jackson’s Mill Apiary, 160 Jackson Mill Road, Weston.
4-H’ers and campers will participate in “Beekeeping 101,” workshop hosted by trained experts. Students will learn about these valuable pollinators, the role they play in the world’s ecosystem and how to safely care for hives, including working with the on-site hives.
Participants for the event include WVU Extension 4-H faculty, staff, volunteers and participating campers, including 4-H’er Emily Carothers of Fayette County, who has been recognized by West Virginia 4-H for her volunteer efforts to establish community vegetable and pollinator gardens at her local library. Christy Turner, beekeeper at the Apiary at the Mill, will also be in attendance.
