Experienced and deep pitching staff has Morgantown Post 2 excited to begin its 96th season

MORGANTOWN — The Morgantown Post 2 Senior Legion baseball team will open the summer this evening by hosting the annual WAJR Wooden Bat Classic over the weekend.

With a mix of experienced returners and some talented newcomers, Post 2 head coach Andy Altemus is looking forward to a competitive and fun summer on the diamond.

“I really like the mix of returners who have been through it before and the new guys with a ton of talent,” he said. “We won’t lack depth or experience, and the group has been really fun to be around so far.”

Returning players like Caleb Cottle (Fairmont State), Cody Thomas (Salem) and Jett Walters (Davis & Elkins) enter the summer of 2024 after completing their freshman seasons in college, while others like Dylan Travinski (Morgantown), Max Cash (University) and Bryson McNew (Preston) played their baseball seasons at the high school level.

While some players have just completed their freshman year in college, others have just come off their freshman year of high school.

“Strength of the roster this year is the age and experience,” Altemus said. “We only have a couple of guys who aren’t in college or committed or signed to play somewhere next year. Those guys that have been here have a culture established and they know what to do and what it should look like, and I think they are hungry to build on what we did last year.”

Post 2 won 24 games last summer and Altemus said with the depth and talent of the team, especially the pitching staff, they are in position to build on that success.

“This is one of the best staffs we’ve had in a decade,” he said. “We’ve always been close, but finally have that depth that is needed to compete at the end of the summer with the pitching rules.”

Post 2 will have a number of talented arms at its disposal in Brady McNew (Preston), Hunter Dakan (Morgantown), Connor Tingler (Fairmont State) and Tristan Milik (Morgantown). To add on to those four, Travinski, Daniel Grabo (University), Judd Messerly (Morgantown) and Greg Eddy (Fairmont State) can all step in at any time.

In the outfield will be Wenkai Campbell (University), Gunner Riley (Fairmont State), Parker Jeffries (Morgantown), Gabe Templeton (Potomac State) and Ethan Dorkins (Garrett).

Morgantown Post 2 will begin the summer schedule in the WAJR Wooden Bat Classic this evening at 7 p.m. on Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park against Parkersburg Post 15.
