Morgantown’s Sharron Young wins Gatorade State Player of the Year

MORGANTOWN — Morgantown high senior guard Sharron Young has been named the recipient of the 2023-24 W.Va. Gatorade State Player of the Year award, announced Thursday morning.

“Winning this award is a tremendous honor,” Young said. “It has always been a personal goal of mine and to be recognized as this year’s recipient is truly a blessing and dream come true.”

Young is the first player in program history to earn the honor from Gatorade.

“I’m really excited for Sharron and very proud of him,” MHS coach Dave Tallman said. “He’s a great person and very hardworking.”

The Akron University signee led the Mohigans to their third-straight Class AAAA state championship, averaging 21.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 5.9 steals per game. He led MHS in every statistical category during the season.

“Most people would recognize this as an individual award, but stuff like this is not possible without the village that has helped me along the way — my family, Coach Tallman and our amazing staff, all my current and former teammates, our trainers, the MHS school administration, and all the loyal Mohigan fans. I said it after the state championship and I will say it again, we have the best support system and community in the state.”

Young became the all-time leading scorer in MHS history in February, passing Jay Jacobs’ mark of 1,268 that was set in 1956. Young finished his MHS career with 1,496 points.

“What a legacy he has left at Morgantown High School,” Tallman said. “The look on the faces of young people when they see him is priceless. He’s a great player and someone little kids can really look up to.”

Young capped off his high school career in style at the state tournament by nailing the go-ahead three-pointer with 13 seconds to go in overtime against Spring Mills. He was named to the all-tournament team for Class AAAA, as well as the Most Outstanding Player in the class.

Young will finish his senior year at Morgantown and join Akron in the fall.
