GRANVILLE — Trinity Christian softball coach Colony Hopkins almost couldn’t believe her eyes on Tuesday.
The Warriors, who won just one game in two seasons since restarting the program, moved to 4-0 on the young season with a 3-2 extra-inning win against visiting Cameron at the Granville Softball Complex on Tuesday.
“Never in a million years did I anticipate this,” Hopkins said. “I knew we were in a better spot this year, but no. And it’s incredible for these girls.”
The Warriors (4-0) had won the first three games of the year via the mercy rule but had to scratch and claw to beat the Dragons.
Cameron pitcher Lexi Bogard was effectively wild, striking out 14 and walking 12 while no-hitting the Warriors through seven innings.
Trinity scored two runs on a pair of bases-loaded walks, but ran into several outs on the basepaths.
“I was worried, we’ve got young girls, we’ve got very young girls.,’ Hopkins said. “I think our immaturity showed a little bit on the basepaths but they were resilient.”
Freshman Peyton Moore got Trinity’s first hit in the bottom of the eight on a line drive to the centerfield fence. She stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Moore scored the game-winning run when Marlo Flecker drew a two-out walk with ball four getting away and rolling to the backstop.
“It’s huge,” Hopkins said. “I said to them ‘I know things started to get to you.’ But they pulled it off.”
Hopkins’ freshman daughter, Paige, pitched for the Warriors, throwing all eight innings while giving up two runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts of her own.
Trinity will travel to play Preston today at 5 p.m.
