Herman Mason

Herman Ashby Mason, 85, of Alpine Lake, Terra Alta, passed away on Feb. 11, 2024, at home, after a short illness.

He was born in Capon Bridge, on Jan. 5, 1939, a son of the late Nelson Mason of Capon Bridge, and the late Bessie Mason of Baltimore, Md.

Herman is survived by companion, Helen Ellmore of Moorefield; and his son, Michael Mason and his wife, Cheryl of Stafford, Va.; his beloved granddaughter, Jenifer Mason and companion, Tim LaPlante, of Lake of the Woods, Va.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Patricia Galusky Mason who passed in 2011, and his sister, Hilda. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Kathryn Kirk of Kingwood, Donna Lamb (Bob) of Manassas, Va., and Charlotte Collier (Tom) of Sellersville, Ind.

He graduated from Capon Bridge High School and kept in touch with his lifelong friends over the years attending many class reunions. He also studied at North Virginia Community College Annandale Campus.

Herman was a proud member of the United States Army from 1957-60 at the rank of E5 Sergeant. He was stationed in Germany at the same camp, and during the same time as Elvis Presley, but he never saw him.

In his younger years, he had as many as three jobs at a time working to stock shelves at Safeway market and as a school bus driver. In later years he worked for Data, Inc. in the computer field. His final job before retirement was in real estate working for Caldwell Banker and ERA Teachers.

The family wishes to thank the Alpine Lake community for their support, kindness and caring of Herman in his later years. It is deeply appreciated. We would also like to thank WV Caring for their kindness and support during his final days.

The family has entrusted Kingwood Funeral Home with his cremation. As per Herman’s wishes there will be no viewing or services.

WV Caring is a non-profit organization that provides hospice care to those with advanced illnesses.
