Milan Roh

Milan Samuel Roh, 92, of Morgantown, passed away Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, at Mon Health Medical Center. He was born Nov. 27, 1931 in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of the late Reverend George and Susan (Piribek) Roh.

At the age of two, Milan was diagnosed with polio. The disease would be a lifelong challenge for him, but it never stopped his drive to accomplish many wonderful things. He graduated as Senior Class President and Valedictorian from Chaney High School in 1950. He entered the workforce as a money counter at Mahoning National Bank while taking night classes at Youngstown State, receiving the American Institute of Banking certificate. In 1957 he accepted a job as an Auditor at the First National Bank in Morgantown. He continued taking night classes earning a degree in commerce from WVU. He continued his education at the School for Bank Auditors and Comptrollers at the University of Wisconsin. In conjunction to his employment, he taught banking courses as an Adjunct Professor at Fairmont State. After a long career at FNB, he retired as Executive Vice President.

Milan loved the Morgantown community and was active in many ways. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. He was also a 50+ year member of the WVU Community Choir. He served as a valued member of the WVU Social Justice Committee for multiple years. He was a generous supporter of many projects in the community, particularly when it involved helping the physically disabled. He was deeply involved with Stepping Stones and was instrumental in the construction of the accessible pool and playground. He established the Milan Roh Endowment Scholarship at WVU for students with physical disabilities. As a memorial to his late wife, Geraldine “Jerry” Roh, he donated the canopy of cherry trees that align the rail trail at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheater.

In spite of his own handicap, Milan was very physically active. He was an avid bicyclist and swimmer and was admired by many for his daily discipline. He was also a dedicated flower and vegetable gardener. He spent his last years at Heritage Point among many friends. Although bound to a wheelchair, he exercised daily at the gym and looked forward to the weekly “wine buds” gatherings.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael Stephen Roh and Joni Lee Roh; grandchildren, Adam Dean Roh and Lucy Cass Roh; sister, Betsy Ruth Davis; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Suzanne Roh; siblings, William Russell Roh (Lacea) and Myron Stephen Roh (Roseanne); and brother-in-law, Richard Davis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Stepping Stones, 400 Mylan Park Lane, Morgantown, WV 26501.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14. Visitation will continue at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 309 Baldwin St., Morgantown, on Friday Dec. 15, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Tony Setley officiating. Interment will take place at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.
