The third-and-final readings of amendments to Westover’s city charter increasing the pay for the positions of mayor and city councilor are expected to be a part of Westover City Council’s agenda when the body meets Monday evening.
If approved, the changes will bump the mayor’s pay from $55,000 to $75,000 and include the mayor in future cost-of-living raises approved by council.
Members of council are paid per meeting. If passed, the per-meeting rate would increase from $80 to $120.
Public hearings on the charter changes will be held at 5:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. ahead of council’s 6 p.m. meeting.
Earlier this year, council used the ordinance process to approve a charter change moving the city’s elections in line with the county’s primary election.
A second proposed change, extending the term of office for mayor from two to four years, received public opposition and will appear as a ballot issue before the city’s voters in May.
If ultimately approved, the pay increases would take effect July 1.
In other Westover news, Public Works Director Jason Stinespring recently told members of council a bug infestation in a home at 5 Bryant Street will likely take several more weeks to deal with.
Residents of Bryant Street and Fairmore Drive showed up to council’s Oct. 2 meeting looking for help with the property owned by Brian and Gary Walden, explaining the infestation was so bad it was spreading to surrounding homes.
The city has condemned the property twice in the last year or so. Appalachian Pest Control is working to clear the bugs.
“It’s getting better, but it just was so bad it’s taking a lot of treatments,” Stinespring said.
