As part of the national First-Generation College Celebration, WVU celebrated its seventh annual WVU FirstGen Week, Nov. 6-10, to recognize first-generation students, faculty, staff and alumni and their accomplishments.
WVU defines first-generation as neither parent earning a four-year degree in the United States.
Events and activities hosted by different colleges and units allowed first-gen individuals and allies to come together and discuss shared experiences. They also helped expose students to the various support services, mentorships and groups on campus to help them find a sense of belonging at WVU.
University leaders and the Mountaineer were also on hand to mix and mingle at certain events.
The inaugural national First-Generation College Celebration launched in 2017 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 that helped to level the playing field for minority and low-income Americans.
