MORGANTOWN — Two candidates vying to succeed Sen. Mike Caputo in the state Senate 13th District have begun their fundraising. And in the 2nd District, incumbent Republican Mike Maroney is up for re-election and faces a primary challenger in Chris Rose, who gave up a U.S. Senate campaign to seek the state seat.
The numbers come from their Third-Quarter financial reports, covering the period of July 1-Sept. 30.
13th District
Marion County Democratic Delegate Joey Garcia announced his intention to run on Aug. 15, a week after Caputo announced his intention not to seek re-election in 2024.
Republican Jonathan Board, of Fairmont, announced on Aug. 16.
The official candidate filing period runs Jan. 8-27, but both got off to quick starts, launching new campaigns with $0 account balances.
Garcia raised $6,382 in individual and PAC contributions and $11,821 at a fundraiser in Morgantown. He also received $2,000 transferred from the campaign accounts of a former Harrison County senator and from Caputo.
Garcia spent $6,194.74, leaving an account balance heading into the fourth quarter of $14,008.26.
Board received $21,580 in individual and PAC contributions, including from two sitting GOP senators and a former delegate; he also raised $44,775 at fundraisers in Morgantown and Fairmont.
While raising more than Garcia, he spent less in the few weeks of this period: $1,984.69. That left him a balance of $64,371.19.
2nd District
As in the 13th, both candidates opened the period with $0 account balances.
Incumbent Maroney, of Marshall County, raised $39,150 in individual and PAC contributions, and transferred $44,109.72 from his 2020 campaign account.
He spent $10,658.94 this period, leaving a balance of $72,600.78.
A GOP U.S. Senate candidate, Chris Rose, of Morgantown, had raised a total of $11,075.30 and spent $14,987.13 before closing his federal account. He dropped out Aug. 21 to run instead for state Senate 2nd District.
Rose raised $10,043.94 in individual and PAC contributions, along with $1,227.27 in-kind from himself to his campaign. He spent $1,152.22, leaving a balance of $8,891.72.
