R. Rudy Filek Sr.

R. Rudy Filek Sr., 90, of Whitehall, formerly of Morgantown and Brookline, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023.
Beloved husband of the late Frances Filek. Loving father to R. Rudy Filek Jr. and Jeffery A. Filek, cherished Pap Pap of Melissa (Vincent) Cherico, Anthony (Amanda) Filek, and Ashton Filek. He was the cherished great-Pap Pap to Enzo, Marco and Nina Cherico, and Audriana, Lucas, Quinn and Everett Filek.

Rudy graduated from Central Catholic High School and continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh on a baseball scholarship. He was a talented athlete, even earning the title of Most Valuable Player his senior year on the team. While at the University of Pittsburgh, he obtained a PhD in education. After his time at Pitt, he served in the United States Air Force, where he played baseball in the military league. His baseball career continued, after serving his country, with the Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League organization. His professional career developed in higher education at both, Penn State University and West Virginia University. He served as the dean of Continuing Education at West Virginia University for many years. Rudy was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed attending and watching Steelers and West Virginia University football games.

Family and friends are welcome Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023, from 1-4 p.m. at 2630 West Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh Pa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church, Our Lady of Hope Parish at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, 2023. Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
