Antique & Makers Market fundraiser set for Oct. 12-13

Now in its 49th year, the Oakland (Md.) Civic Club is gearing up for its Antique & Makers Market fundraiser.

The market is the only event of its kind during the Autumn Glory Festival, offering antique and vintage treasures along with quality handmade items.

The Antique and Makers Market will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 13-14 at the Oakland Community Center (old armory), 14 N. 8th St. in Oakland, Md. Admission is a $2 donation for anyone over 12 years of age. This is good for both days of the event. For questions, email gfwc.oakland@yahoo.com or visit the Civic Club website at www.civicclubofoaklandmd.com

“This market is the event we count on to raise money for local nonprofit organizations,” said Jean Tumbarello, event chair and club treasurer. “Every person who comes to the market is helping to make a difference in the lives of so many people. There are many craft shows held all over the county Autunm Glory weekend, but our vendors offer items that have a history as long as the civic club — even longer. We have vendors offering antique and vintage items as well as a blacksmith, a quilter, a basket maker, knitter, a furniture maker, and many talented people who make beautiful items.”

In addition to the antique dealers and makers, the Civic Club Cafe offers homemade soups, chili, sloppy joes and baked goods for purchase. Due to popular demand, chicken matzo ball soup will be available this year as well as a limited number of quarts of soup. Gluten free and vegetarian food options will be available and lots of home baked goodies.

There will also be an opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket for the Winners Choice drawing. Now in its second year, the winners of the drawing will get to choose between a $500 cash prize, a basket of goodies filled with gift cards and other items donated by local businesses, or a full/queen size quilt made bycivic club members and quilted by Cathi Harsh, one of the event vendors.

Tickets will be available Oct. 13-14 during the event and the winning tickets will be drawn at 4:30 p.m. Oct 14 . The winners will be notified by phone.

“The quilt has really generated a lot of interest this year. The pattern is called Chandelier and is made from donated scraps of fabric,” said Tumbarello. “We have been selling tickets all summer and everyone who sees the quilt comments on how lovely it is. It will be on display in the lobby of the community center.”

In addition to sponsors, this year the club received a mini grant from the Maryland Heritage Area and Western Maryland Gateway to the West for marketing expenses.

“We can reach a larger audience because of this grant, get new banners made along with other marketing materials. It has helped so much,” Tumbarello said.
