Helen Shamberger

Helen Loar Shamberger, 98, of Morgantown, passed away on Sept. 29, 2023, at Sundale Nursing Home with the assistance of WVU Hospice after a short illness.
She lived at the Village at Heritage Point for the last several years. Helen grew up in Laurel Point, the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Thorn Loar.

She graduated from Morgantown High School and West Virginia University with a degree in library science. Her life revolved around her community and family. While at WVU, she was a member of Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi, serving many years on the house corporation. She was a member of the Service League, logging countless hours at the Old Stone House and the Monongalia County Health Department Well Baby Clinic. She was a member of the Campus Club and served on the Morgantown Hospice Board. In addition, she found time to play bridge.

Helen is survived by her four children: Diane Puckett (Arnold), David Shamberger, Tom Shamberger (Marti), and Anne Marshall. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jennifer Puckett, Suzanne High (Jeff), Steven Shamberger (Sarah May), Holly Puckett, Logan Shamberger, Cal Carlson and Carlie Nehls (Blake), as well as four great-grandchildren: Christopher High, Nicholas High, Jack Shamberger and Dylan May.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Harold Shamberger, her sister Opal Radcliff, and her infant brother Robert Loar, son-in-law Fred Marshall, and daughter-in-law Jill Jamison Shamberger.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Laurel Point United Methodist Church, 328 Sugar Grove Road, Morgantown, WV 26501 or to Wesley United Methodist Church, 503 N. High St., Morgantown, WV 26505.

Visitation will be held at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Monday Oct. 2, 2023, from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Martha Ognibene officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at East Oak Grove Cemetery.
