Ruth Hicks has 102 reasons to celebrate

Ruth Hicks celebrated her 102nd birthday Wednesday.

Born Sept. 27, 1921, in Milford, Texas, she earned her undergraduate degree from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Women’s University, and her Master of Science in social science at the University of
Illinois.

Ruth moved to Morgantown in fall 1949 with her husband. She and her husband both worked at West Virginia University as educators, teaching history and English, respectively. She also has one son who worked in theater set design.

Ruth reflected on her life in Morgantown and shared that Morgantown has grown and developed exponentially since she moved here almost 75 years ago.

Throughout her life, Ruth has enjoyed going on walks and hikes with her husband, has joined several book clubs and attended courses through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).

Ruth currently lives in The Suites at Heritage Point, where she’s lived for almost six years.

“I am always eager to share with people how much I love The Suites,” said Ruth. “The care I’ve received here has been wonderful and the people are so kind.”

To celebrate her 102nd birthday, The Suites recognized her at the Resident Monthly Birthday Tuesday.

When asked what the key to living a long life is, Ruth said, “I can’t think of anything that has made this happen, except that I’ve been blessed with good health. I eat green vegetables and I walked just about everywhere I went growing up, other than that, I am just blessed to be here.”
