Larry Pack, Gov. Justice adviser and former delegate, announces run for state treasurer

MORGANTOWN — Republican Larry Pack, a former state delegate and current senior adviser to Gov. Jim Justice, announced his candidacy for state treasurer on Monday.

Larry Pack

Pack enters the 2024 GOP primary race aiming to succeed Treasurer Riley Moore, who is in turn running to succeed Rep. Alex Mooney, who is running against Justice for the GOP nomination to challenge Sen. Joe Manchin — or whomever seeks the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.

Pack, of Charleston, joined the Justice team in August 2022. Before that, he owned the Stonerise network — which includes 17 transitional and skilled nursing care centers, therapy, home health, and hospice care providers across West Virginia and southeast Ohio.

He is a certified public accountant and an alumnus of the West Virginia Institute of Technology.

Pack calls himself a pro-jobs, pro-life, pro-second amendment conservative.

“The Lord has blessed me in many ways and among His greatest blessings was making me a lifelong resident of West Virginia,” he said. “I want to do everything I can to help this state create a stronger, better future so our children and grandchildren can live, work, go to church and raise their families here.”

His platform, he said, includes fighting “liberal Washington Democrats,” keeping the government spending within its means, and supporting sound financial education in schools.

“If we want to grow more businesses here and create jobs, our young people deserve to learn how to balance budgets, know what profits and losses mean and meet payrolls,” he said. He believes education should focus more on responsible financial literacy along with math, science, English and history.

Pack and his wife, Lisa, have six children and two grandchildren.

He will face Hardy County Commissioner Steven Schetrom, of Baker, in the primary. Schetrom is a Shepherd University alumnus and a financial advisor, owning Legacy Financial.

His platform is: “Growth, Transparency, and Stewardship.”

Schetrom and his wife, Rachel, have two sons, Eli and Silas. Rachel is a teacher at East Hardy High School. Eli is a first-year cadet at West Point, and Silas is a sophomore at East Hardy High School.
