Morgantown remains unbeaten with another dominant outing

MORGANTOWN – The Morgantown High School baseball team continued its winning ways on Wednesday evening with a 14-2, five-inning victory over the visiting Brooke Bruins at Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park.

The 14 runs for MHS came on nine hits. Junior Caleb Nutter tallied three of them going 3 for 3 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring two of his own. Five different Mohigans tallied at least two RBI, with seniors Aaron Jamison and Ty Galusky earning three each.

“We went out today and played good defense, ran the bases, and swung the bat,” MHS head coach Pat Sherald said after the game. “I told the guys, even our outs were quality at-bats. Nothing really negative today.”

MHS scored 14 runs for the second straight game after a 14-1 win over Parkersburg South in its last outing.

A four-run first inning on offense set the tone early for MHS, as the hosts would also post innings of four runs in the third and five in the fourth.

Base runners have been the catalyst for MHS throughout the season so far, and it was the same Wednesday. The Mohigans tallied 17 total bases as a team and seven different runners crossed the plate in the game.

“Baserunning in the first inning was a huge reason we were able to score those four runs,” Sherald said. “Hunter Dakan came in and only threw 68 pitches and really commanded the strike zone well.”

The junior lefty pitched all five innings for the Mohigans (9-0), and only took 68 pitches to finish the game, including 50 for strikes.

“His first game of the season, his command was really good with his fastball, then we focused on increasing his strike ratio after game two,” Sherald said of Dakan’s progression so far. “That’s his third start of the year and one of his best. He threw three different types of pitches for strikes today, and in high school baseball that’s definitely an advantage.”

MHS entered the bottom of the fourth inning with a 9-2 lead, and after Caleb Cottle flew out to center field, Nutter earned hit third hit of the game to start the rally. Five runs would come across the board for MHS with three coming with one swing by Galusky. He doubled to center field with the bases loaded and scored three runs to give his team a 13-2 advantage.

Dakan then ended the game by inducing a double play and notching his fifth strikeout.

The Mohigans remain undefeated and will next travel to Linganore (Md.) on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.
