West Virginia throws one-hitter to complete three-game sweep of UNC Greensboro

MORGANTOWN — Braden Barry hit a three-run home run to extend his hitting streak to nine games Sunday, as West Virginia finished off a three-game sweep of UNC Greensboro with an 8-0 victory at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

The Mountaineers (15-4) have won nine straight, their longest winning streak since the 2016 team won 10 in a row.

“How could things be much better?” asked WVU head coach Randy Mazey. “We’re getting good starting pitching and we’re seeing the ball well and having good at-bats.”

BOX SCORE

WVU starter Grant Siegel (2-1) allowed one hit and no runs over five innings to earn his second win of the season.

WVU relievers Robby Porco, Keegan Allen, Noah Short and Carlson Reed combined for four no-hit innings.

It was West Virginia’s first shutout of the season.

“We’ve got guys who don’t overpower you, but it makes an old-school guy like me happy, because they throw strikes,” Mazey said.

Barry also homered in the first game of the series on Saturday. He was 5 for 12 in the three games, scored seven times and drove in five runs as the Mountaineers’ leadoff hitter.

His three-run shot on Sunday helped give WVU a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

WVU added two more runs in the sixth when Barry and J.J. Wetherholt both singled and then scored on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder’s choice.

Wetherholt, Landon Wallace and Tevin Tucker also had two hits along with Barry.

Wesley Buck took the loss for UNC Greensboro (10-10). He gave up four hits and three runs in just 1 1/3 innings.

Five of WVU’s nine wins in the streak have been on the road, and the Mountaineers averaged 15.2 runs per game in those contests.

WVU returns home to host Hofstra at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in a two-game series before hosting Xavier in a three-game series that begins Friday.
