Matilda Mary Staggs, 97, of Rutherfordton, N.C., formerly of Westover, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, at Rutherfordton Regional Hospital. Matilda was born in Kingwood on Jan. 13, 1926, a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Corona Castagneri.
Matilda worked as an operator for Morgantown Telephone Company for many years. She was also a member of the former St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and also at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family and will be greatly missed.
Matilda is survived by her daughter, Kathy Whitlock, of Rutherfordton, N.C.; sister, Agatha Keenan, of Birmingham, Ala.; and grandchildren, David Longfellow, Michael Staggs Jr., Laura Whitlock and Charlotte Whitlock.
In addition to her parents, Matilda was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Staggs; daughter, Patricia Ann Longfellow; son, Michael Marvin Staggs; and brothers, Andrew Castagneri and James Castagneri.
Friends may gather at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Feb. 16, with Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati as celebrant. Burial will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown. McCulla Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
